In this spirit of spontaneity, I packed in a rush. I grabbed four lucky panties, three lucky bras, and then my lucky socks. The rest was filler. Back then, it was always white tanks and overalls. For the plane, I was showing boob—I definitely had to let the girls out. I wore one of the recycled Wrangler denim shirts with the embroidery from Great China Wall and the True Religion denim shorts I went literally everywhere in. (I still have everything, so if the Met Gala does a mid-2000s theme, come to me.)

When I tell you that I packed fast, I should say that this was by my standards. Of course, I made the jet wait because I was late. Plus, I showed up with Daisy, my maltipoo, in the giant Louis Vuitton pet carrier in monogram canvas. I wasn’t about to leave my baby just so I could go off on this adventure.

When I boarded the jet, Daisy in her bag hooked on my right arm, I was surprised to see five other guys on the plane too. Friends and assistants, or a melding of the two, all in the guy uniforms of baggie shirts and never-washed jeans with expensive sneakers. I hadn’t factored them into a romantic getaway. They looked at me, then at Movie Star, then back at me.

“Hi,” I said. If the Movie Star was bothered I was late and brought my dog, he didn’t show it. The guys followed his lead in everything, and for the flight out east, I was one of the guys. This was actually comfortable for me, as the church youth group trips we used to take were mostly the guys I recruited. It was easy for me to be kind of cool.

This is nice, I thought. This guy might be worth a try.

And then we landed. And I met Josh.

I don’t remember Josh’s actual name. He just looked like a Josh and like a lot of the male PAs on sets that I’d been on. Production assistants have a mission for every conversation, and their job is to get you to do whatever is asked to make the film work.

Josh boarded the plane, greeted the star first, then me. “Here’s the lowdown,” he said. “We have a car for you to the hotel”—addressing Movie Star without looking at me. “We have a car for Jessica.”

Oh. We had to be in separate cars. Oh.

I don’t know what happened to his friends, because before I knew it, Movie Star was off in an SUV. Daisy and I were loaded into another with a giant bodyguard instead of the man who invited me on the trip.

Here’s what I can tell you about most bodyguards: They are nice guys. They do the job because they are big, and also because they are naturally protective. I bet I can get some information out of this sweet teddy bear, I thought.

In the order I best remember, here was the small talk I made:

“Are you married?”

“How many
